Abstract

The National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death (NCEPOD) is an independent body that reviews clinical practice and identifies remedial factors in the practice of anaesthesia, all types of surgery and other invasive procedures with the main aim of improving the quality and safety of patient care. It collects basic details on all deaths occurring in hospital during or within 30 days of a surgical procedure and identifies patterns of practice, service provision and public health issues that may contribute to a poor outcome or the death of patients. This review discusses recent relevant reports.
